Recently the Obama Administration has allowed spouses, children, and parents of military personnel who entered the US illegally without papers to apply for their green cards without having to leave the country. This new law applies to those who have a US citizen family member who is currently on active military duty or have previously served in the US military.
With the passage of the new immigration reform bill in the Senate, the challenge now is whether or not it will pass in the House because Republicans hold the majority in the House and they are opposed to the new bill. Some say Republicans may not approve it because the bill does not strengthen border security and rewards undocumented immigrants by granting citizenship.
The Legal Immigration Family Equity (LIFE) Act allows some people to change their status to permanent resident even if they would not be otherwise eligible. Protection under the LIFE Act is called Section 245 adjustment of status and it might be able to help you get a green card.
